One of fifty copies on vellum, the only large paper printed.
This volume contains La Soif et la Faim, Le Roi se meurt, L'Œuf dur, La Lacune, Le Salon de l'automobile are the titles of the plays that make up this fourth volume of theater.
La Soif et la Faim is the story of a man who suffers from a very common disease: that of not being able to sit still, of not being able to find joy or serenity within himself. He runs the roads, he gets lost in a hopeless quest.
Le Roi se meurt is the ceremony of the agony of a king burlesque and all-powerful: he had commanded the elements, had reigned for centuries, cannot accept the collapse of his universe (of his kingdom) nor his own death. The queen teaches him how to die.
The other pieces are short, humorous, comic scenes.

Eugène Ionesco (1909-1994) took his place in the 1950s among the representatives of what would be called "the theater of the absurd." His first plays ( La Cantatrice chauve, La Leçon ) translates his astonishment at the emptiness of beings and all forms of stupefaction. Tueur sans gages defends the individual against a lethargic society; Rhinoceros delivers an even clearer message: whoever wants to remain a man will have to be wary of everyone. Despite an ever-increasing anxiety (Voyages chez les morts), Ionesco is one of those who do not capitulate.
