One of thirty non-commercial copies on labor vellum, this one specially printed for the author, after five copies on Holland paper.

“The pines sway high in the sky. They whistle breathlessly and cast their dark melody into the broad daylight that shines on the forest. Gonaïbo and Harmonise, hand in hand, go among the trees, seized by the vast voice of the conifers. They run and fill their hands as they go with wild strawberries and juicy blackberries. Drunk, they plunge into the thickest part of the forest. Suddenly they stop, crushed by the wonder that is offered to their eyes. Before them stretches a veritable wall of wild orchids, a tapestry of a hundred colors. There are all shades, all shapes, each more precious than the last, plain, striped, with volutes of stamens, hemmed petals, spatulate, curled, slanted and smiling eyes, red and gaping mouths, ivory teeth."

Jacques Stephen Alexis

Haitian novelist, poet and politician born in 1922 in Gonaïves. Founder of the "Parti d'entente populaire", opposed François Duvalier. In 1961, trying to land in Haiti with a small commando, was captured, reported missing but probably assassinated.
