Galerie Gallimard is pleased to exhibit the American artist Patti Smith on the occasion of the publication of two works.
The exhibition presents a selection of photographs, writings and drawings reproduced in Une saison en enfer, 1873, as well as around fifty Polaroids taken from Un Livre de jours : une invitation au voyage into the universe of Patti Smith.
Author, musician and artist, Patti Smith has recorded thirteen albums, including the groundbreaking Horses in 1975. She has written many best-selling texts, including Just Kids, Mr. Train,  Dévotion et L’année du singe (2020), all published by Gallimard. Patti Smith lives in New York.

 

PUBLICATIONS

Patti Smith accompanies the full text of Une saison en enfer by Arthur Rimbaud, in the collection "Grande Blanche illustrée", on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the first publication of this emblematic text. The edition is augmented with poems and letters from the poet, who was, for the American artist, a source of inspiration for her personal construction and for her songs.

"J’avais seize ans quand j’ai découvert Arthur Rimbaud. J’étais attirée par son visage et ses poèmes, qui m’intriguaient et me fascinaient.
Envoûtée par leur charme grisant, j’en émergeais tremblante, gardant peu de souvenirs de ce que j’avais lu. Malgré cela, ses mots s’étaient en quelque sorte gravés dans mon cerveau, enroulés comme un cordage sur le pont d’un navire abandonné au milieu d’une brume mortelle. Une saison en enfer a été la drogue de mes jeunes années, l’élixir recelant les outils et la méthode pour renverser les fausses idoles. The book Un livre de jours traces through photos a year of life in the world of Patti Smith, inspired by her Instagram account.
Every day is an opportunity to discover a new photo of the artist or his personal collection, to reveal his inspirations, his icons, his works, his objects, the artists and places that are dear to him. These poetic, tender and often nostalgic images are accompanied by captions full of wit and sweetness.
